No doubt by now, most of us know more about viruses than we ever thought we could, or wanted to. The list of viruses from Adeno to Zika is a long one, and the study of them is arduous.
If you care to learn more about their specifics – Genus; Family; where they like to dwell; how they get there; and what havoc they wreak when they “arrive” - this link at the Viral Zone could keep you busy for months.
According to two interrelated articles on two separate sites by David Pride of UC San Diego, and Rockefeller University’s, Chandrabali Ghose:
“Viruses are the most abundant biological entities on Earth. There are an estimated 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 (10 Quintillion) viruses on Earth, making them the most abundant form of life on the planet. In aggregate, they number far more than all other types of organisms combined.
There are an estimated 380 trillion viruses inside the average human body. That’s ten times the already staggering number of bacteria in the typical human microbiome.”
You can read all about it here - The Virome: 10 Facts about Viruses You Might Not Know, and here - www.EarthSky / Trillions of Viruses.
You will also find in the above listed articles references to CRISPR technology, which may seem at first glance, as scientific magic in the making. Apparently, there are still a few scientists and other individuals who take issue with the manipulation of life and genomes and such. They have had the incredible foresight to offer up a Moratorium on this technology, pending further discussion on the ethics of said issue.
"We call for a global moratorium on all clinical uses of human germline editing — that is, changing heritable DNA (in sperm, eggs or embryos) to make genetically modified children." "It would be irresponsible to proceed with any clinical use … unless and until 1) the relevant safety and efficacy issues have been resolved … and 2) there is broad societal consensus about the appropriateness of the proposed application”.
A bit late since the article also states that two babies have already been "made" in China. No doubt one would not have to dig too deep to find that there are quite a few experiments which are well advanced in these technologies - but that's just speculation.
It is one thing to study life to try to learn how it works for the sheer pleasure of witnessing the miracle of it. It is quite another thing to manipulate it in the guise of “improving” upon it. Then to have the arrogance to claim that manipulation as "advanced science" in the name of "protecting" the human race, is ultimate in folly.
"History shows again and again how Nature points out the folly of man - Godzilla!"
